Outcry Over New Candle Ban in Holiday Rentals: A Step Too Far for Caravan and Lodge Owners?

The recent directive from the Home Office banning the use of candles and tea lights in holiday rentals has ignited significant backlash, particularly within the park industry. This sweeping regulation, intended to mitigate fire risks, has been met with scepticism and frustration from property owners and guests seeking a quaint, romantic ambience during their stays.

This guidance extends to small bed and breakfasts, houses, cottages, and chalets accommodating up to 10 people and encompasses various non-traditional holiday settings. These include holiday caravans, camping and glamping pods, bothies, lodges, shepherds’ huts, tents, tree houses, and yurts. With such a broad impact, the decree has prompted significant debate about balancing safety precautions and personal freedoms.

Critics of the policy, such as Sir Mike Penning, a Senior Conservative MP and former firefighter and fire minister, have labelled the guidance as “absolutely bonkers.” Penning’s critique highlights a common sentiment that the regulations are excessively paternalistic, arguing, “As a former firefighter and fire minister, I can’t understand how a civil servant is lecturing me about a candlelit dinner with my wife. It’s pathetic – just get out of my life and let people use their common sense.”

Matthew Lesh of the Institute of Economic Affairs echoed this sentiment, advocating for the autonomy of bed and breakfast operators and their guests to decide for themselves about the use of candles. He pointed out that adults should be trusted to enjoy a “romantic getaway without burning down the house,” criticising the guidance as just another in a “long list of silly state regulations and guidance that do little more than make life miserable.”
